Project Management & Experience Design

Creating a local multiplayer party game during an 3 week interdisciplinary team project for my study Creative Media and Game Technologies at Saxion University of Applied Sciences.
2022

Project Description

"Space-Cat Pirates on an Alpacaship doing a Competition Event," or S.P.A.C.E, is a 4-player party game. Play as a space pirate cat controlling its Alpacaship and complete minigames using your phone as controller in free-for-all and two-versus-two minigames.

The game combines a 3D environment with 2D characters, featuring colorful artwork and adorable characters. Players will encounter both technological, sci-fi-themed technology and planet environments. The design choice of using 2D characters in a 3D environment is to fasten the development process within a very time-constricted project without losing the overall quality.

Experience Design

Our game development team consisted of seven members. My primary focus within the project was project management, planning, and product ownership. Additionally, I contributed to the user experience design which includes level design, user interface (UI) design, and user testing. While I do not have much visuals to show in terms of project management, I can share some of the concepts I created and how they were integrated into the game.

Below, you can see on the left level design concepts and on the right the actual visualization in-game. The first concept is a two-versus-two laser shooting minigame and the second concept is a valve-rotating free-for-all minigame. During the level design phase, I also designed various UI designs for each level. The final choice of UI and level design was determined through team discussions, where we evaluated the pros and cons of each design.

Website Design

Another role I undertook during this project was web development. Below, you'll find a wireframe I designed for the website. I subsequently programmed the website and communicated with the visual designer which assets are needed, so I could implement the necessary assets. In retrospect, the website may appear outdated, with most elements lacking phone compatibility. However, it remains functional for desktop and can be accessed here.
