Case study to see what it takes to develop an app for an international energy company.
2025
Case
EnergySuper is an international energy company that focuses on sustainability and efficient energy use. To give their customers better insight into their energy consumption and help them save energy, EnergySuper wants to develop a mobile app. This app should enable customers to monitor their energy consumption in real time, receive tips for saving energy, and view their monthly bills and forecasts. To achieve this, they have asked DevApp to be their digital partner. In this partner role, DevApp will be responsible for developing and building the app. The client has an app development budget of €70,000 for a React Native app to be developed by DevApp. DevApp is a full-service product studio and is therefore responsible for the entire process.

Reflection
With a total budget of €70,000 for the EnergySuper mobile app, I allocated €3,500 to QA and testing. This was a conscious decision to focus resources on the core “must-have” features such as real-time insights, billing, and user login to deliver a solid MVP within three months. In hindsight, a larger budget would have allowed for more thorough QA, including usability and performance testing across devices. This would have improved stability, accessibility, and overall user satisfaction. It also would have enabled deeper exploration of how users engage with the app’s functions and how subtle gamification elements could enhance motivation and retention.
